If you are familiar with theater at all then you obviously know who Julia Taymor is. She is the visionary producer and director of such famous musicals as "The Lion King" and has also ventured into film, directing movies such as "Frida" and "Across The Universe". Anyways, here latest foray into Broadway has been something that one could definitely describe as a labour of love. She has worked on this for a long time, investing MILLZ ON MILLZ and it still has managed to be an epic fail. The reason why this is such a big deal is because this musical has all of the elements for success--a cool superhero/story, songs made by freakin' Bono and The Edge, and an astronomical budget allowing for cool special effects. So, where did this go wrong? After being hyped up for literally years it has consistently flopped at previews, been plagued by injuries and numerous cast rearrangements, and creative team replacements. Critics say that it lacks cohesiveness and the special effects actually bog the musical down. So, Julia is currently working her ass off trying to bring this musical to fruition and making it the blockbuster it deserves.
Anyways, my interest in this musical began when I downloaded the soundtrack for it just out of curiousity. I never thought I would say this in a million years but it is actually pretty decent. I have included a download link for one of my fave songs off of it, but it is overall good soundtrack. I hope that Julia manages to get her shit together and make this musical work because lets be honest... who wouldn't want to see a play about Spiderman... he's pretty fucking cool.
