Avicii BBC Radio One Essential Mix

Tim Bergling, known more popularly as Avicii is quickly becoming "The Next Big DJ". His electro-club bangers remain consistent in quality and have a "feel-good" quality to them. Each song progresses and builds up in energy without getting into dubstepp-y territory like most other artists. This mix that I am posting is two hours long and I listened to it all the way through and let me tell you: it fucking rocks. Avicii blends remixes of popular songs on electronic charts right now with classics with a healthy mix of his greatest hits. BBC Radio One Essential Mixes are an awesome thing I came across. They are dropped weekly on BBC's Radio Channel and they are always mixed by top-knotch DJ's. This Avicii essential mix is the best I have heard yet. I will post a tracklisting so you can tell what song you are listening to at what time. My personal favorites on the mix are Jailbait vs. Insomnia (Acapella), Nothing But Love For You (ReMode), and of course, Penguin. Enjoy this and be prepared to become obsessed with the mastery that is Avicii!!!

Interesting Beachwear

I came across this brand of swim trunks designed my Orlebar Brown earlier this summer. He is a French designer who noticed the lack of variety and quality there was in Men's swimwear. To solve this problem he created a high-end, avant-garde style of swimwear that utilizes fascinating graphic prints, cool basic colors, simple design, and well tailored fit.  All styles can be bought at www.mrporter.com

Japanese Denim + Naked & Famous Denim

Japan is ages ahead of America in terms of fashion. They have the craziest styles there and people are always pushing it to the limits over there, wearing the most out of control styles. One thing that Japan is particularly well known for are their denim mills. Their styles and incredibly well-produced denim have permeated into international fashion. Well-known brands such as Evisu and Red Monkey Jeans provided us with crazy designs posted on sturdy, selvedge denim that has spawned numerous copycats and thousands of imitations.
These Red Monkey Company Jeans run for around $800--outta control designs... too much in my opinion.
I became interested in Japanese denim when I made a trip to Tokyo my junior year in high school and visited one of the Evisu stores in Japan's hyper trendy Ginza district.
I was taken by the incredible amount of detail they put into their denim. At this store, their is a permanent employee that hand-paints Evisu's signature "Seagull" back-pocket design after the customer chooses which denim style they want. And believe me, this meticulous attention to detail comes at a price-their jeans often come at a $300+ price point. In my opinion, this price is well worth it because these jeans will outlast any other pair in your collection and really make any outfit you wear super swagged-out. I own three pairs of Evisu's and they are hands down my favorite. They are an unpretentious company that really know what they are doing-a paradigm that seems to be the standard for almost all
prestigious Japanese denim mills.
I recently came across this Japanese de

Thoughts on Deadmau5 + New Song

Joel Zimmerman is an amazing dj. If anyone tries to argue with this, look at the facts... He's been nominated for a Grammy (Best Electronic Song-Remix of Morgan Page's 'Longest Road'), come out CD's with record sales, and toured nonstop selling out shows left and right.
The reason why I am still a devout Deadmau5 fan is because of the quality of his music and how consistent he is. Zimmerman started out writing code (how he came up with his Deadmau5 moniker) and started out with a very signature style. Faxing Berlin, Move for Me, Ghost N' Stuff, Strobe etc. all follow the same formula and are very distinctly Deadmau5. However, unlike Skrillex (see previous post) Deadmau5's style is constantly evolving and I am beginning to think that Zimmerman is phasing out his very electro-computerized sound associated with Deadmau5 and moving into his own style as a DJ.
Anyone who has heard Raise Your Weapon knows that Deadmau5 does good dubstep. If you haven't heard this song yet you need to check it out right now. He evolved his signature progressive style into something different and his foray into dubstep worked. This is what impressed me so much about Zimmerman. He is not afraid to try something new. People are always complaining about how arrogant he is for hating being called a DJ, but honestly, its quite understandable. A DJ just mixes music and makes hella remixes. Deadmau5 builds his music, adventuring into new territory and making his music extremely easy to listen too.
Anyways, his new song, which samples Neon Hitch is fucking awesome. It is called "I Can't Behave Myself" and in the same vein as "Raise Your Weapon" finds Deadmau5 exploring new territory. From its fire-breathing dragon sounds to its catchy, poppy vocals this song is a surefire hit. It also finds Zimmerman straying away from his previous Deadmau5-y territory and moving into his own funky style. And I like it. Check it out.

MMMMMM DJ Chuckie

DJ Chuckie is one of the more recent artists I have really been getting into. His songs never fail to get my head bumping when driving along and most of them have me fist pumping like a champ. Out of all the songs I have heard from him there are two that I am obsessed with...

The first song is the vocal mix of his number one single "Let The Bass Kick" featuring a very unexpected cameo by... Jermaine Dupri??! However, this unexpected works, to epic proportions. For my Tulane readers, this song is without a doubt a Palms jam. The lyrics are guaranteed to get anybody up and dancing (most likely on a pole). Check it out below.

The second song is an addictive remix of an... unreleased Michael Jackson song! This song gets you up and dancing and just makes you feel good. I really like how DJ Chuckie takes a song and adds his own distinctive dance-dance style to it, much in the same vein as my other favorite DJ, Tim Berg (otherwise known as Avicii). Enjoy.

A thought on Skrillex + New Song

I was listening to the local electronic station the other day, when a nice sounding dubstep song came on. Within about 10 seconds of hearing it I wagered to my friend Grace that it was without a doubt Skrillex. The reasoning behind this is because Skrillex has trademarked a very distinctive style of dubstep. It starts out with a catchy house beat, builds up in energy, then some crazy voice/sound signals the drop. Think about it... Cinema-DROP THE BASS, Fucking Die I-YOU GIVE ME SHIT AND FUCKING DIIIIIE, Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites-OhhOOhhhOHHHHMYGODDD. And sure enough this new song I heard on the radio was by Skrillex. It follows his tried & true formula... dropping with a clean ARE YOU READY FOR THE RUFFNECK BASS. I like this song but the problem I have with Skrillex is that he has such a small amount of variability. When I saw him live at Sasquatch I had a blast for the first 45 minutes running and jumping into people and screaming out his crazy drops but after a while it just got really repetitive. He has revolutionized dubstep by managing to make it mainstream, putting it in the earphones and speakers of the modern day public. Even my own mom likes Skrillex's remix of Cinema. However, if Skrillex is to remain relevant long-term I would like to see him do something a little different then just relying on his formulaic songs. Check out this song and let me know what you think
